The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), accredited by Cambridge English Language Assessment, is an introductory course in teaching English to adult learners for candidates with little or no previous English language teaching experience as well as those with experience but little previous training. The qualification is recognised at English teaching companies all around the world and is very often a pre-requisite to employment as an EFL teacher.
“I thoroughly enjoyed completing the CELTA course at Apollo. CELTA has been an enriching and inspiring experience and I would recommend Apollo IH to future trainees. Thank you for a fun experience!" CELTA trainee – Nov/Dec 2014
“The course was extremely good. Very organised, great tutors, manageable timetable. I've never learnt so much in one month!” CELTA trainee – July/August 2015
The course:
Each programme takes place over a four week period, and these run many times a year at our CELTA training centres in
Ha Noi and
Ho Chi Minh City. The work is intensive so that, upon successful completion, teachers are fully qualified. But more importantly, they gain key skills/teaching qualities including:
→ Learning the principles of effective teaching
→ Gaining a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
→ Hands-on teaching practice
→ Building confidence
While the course requires dedication, it is a fantastic achievement and is suited to candidates who wish to pursue an EFL career, opening up numerous exciting opportunities.
There are five main units of learning:
→ Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
→ Language analysis and awareness
→ Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
→ Planning and resources for different contexts
→ Developing teaching skills and professionalism
“I really enjoyed the course. It was very challenging, but I found it interesting and I learnt so much. The tutors were fantastic. They were helpful and always there to discuss any CELTA issues. They offered constructive criticism that helped me to improve my teaching.” CELTA trainee – Nov/Dec 2013
Course pre-requisites:
As CELTA is an introductory course to English teaching, you don’t need any other EFL/ESL qualifications or experience to be accepted. You usually need to have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education as well as a high advanced/proficiency level of English. If you decide to stay in Vietnam to teach, you will need to have a Bachelors degree in addition to the CELTA.
CELTA is an intensive course. Course hours are approximately 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, but evenings and weekends should also be kept free for lesson planning and assignments.
